Reports from Galgala town, 45km away from Bossaso town say that at least 17 soldiers from Puntland forces were killed after Islamist militia ambushed them on Tuesday night.
The attack occurred at Puntland military base near Galgala town where the Islamist militia attacked, officials told Marqaan news on Wednesday.
“The militants hiding in Galgala area have unexpectedly attacked the base of Puntland forces and killed 11 of our forces” Khalif Issa Mudan, the Puntland security minister told reporters during a press conference in Bosasso on Wednesday.
“At least 7 others of our forces were injured” he added.
Mr Mudan said that his administration was attempting to launch fresh anti-Al Shabaab operations in the area after several hundred of Al Shabab fighters from Southern Somalia regions poured into the territory following the defeat of Al Shabab in the southern regions where AMISOM forces were battling against them.

On his side a spokesman for Al Shabab militant group, Sheikh Abdiasis abu Mus’ab who spoke with radio Andalus, on behalf of Al Shabab said that they have killed 17 soldiers in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.
“On Allah’s wishes we managed to attack the apostates’ base in Galgala as the Mujahidin killed ore than 20 soldiers at once” abu Mus’ab said.
He claimed also that the area was taken over the Islamist militia in Galgala.
Meanwhile the RBC Radio corespondent in Bosasso reports at least four bodies definitely from the Islamist fighters were brought to Bossaso main hospital on Wednesday morning.
The attack came as the president of Puntland administration of the northeastern region of Somalia, Abdurahman Mohamed was visiting the region’s port town of Bosasso.
